How to Become a Richmond Tree Steward

Steps to Tree Steward Certification

Step 1: Apply

During the next summer application period,  complete the form to be considered for the Richmond Tree Stewards

Accepted applicants will be notified in August. A $160 fee will be collected by the first meeting.

Step 2: Attend Courses

Ten weekly training sessions will be held. 

There will be opportunities to attend weekend pruning labs, one of which is required. Optional field trips on the weekends include visiting RTS reforestation sites, learning techniques for invasive plant removal, and tree planting.

Step 3: Become a Certified Tree Steward

Trainees that attend or make up all courses and complete a required number of volunteer hours are certified.

Stewards may remain actively certified through completion of continuing education and volunteer activities.

Class location is provided in your acceptance email. Below is an approximate syllabus for 2026 courses, held Wednesdays from 6:30 – 8:30 PM except for field labs.
